“There’s something going on down there, did you see that small explosion? Looked like an RPG strike to me. I didn’t know the T-men were operating in this region.”

The Lieutenant leaned over to at the crewman’s console. The system was a state of the art AN/APY-7 radar that was operating in wide area surveillance mode. They were on a training mission, bringing on-stream a new software update to the aircraft systems. This being Afghanistan, their orders were to report in on anything unusual. Just in case it warranted a closer look.

“Play it back to me.”

The technical sergeant switched to an adjacent monitor and replayed the recording of the explosion.

“Yeah, it's an RPG, no question. We’ll call this one in. Good work, Sergeant.”

He returned to his communications console and contacted their base controller. The man didn’t sound too interested at first. Why should he, this was Afghanistan? It was only unusual when people weren’t shooting at each other.

“I copy that, Hawk Two. I don’t see any need to…whoa, wait up. Which region did you say?”

“It’s a village close to the Pak border, place by the name of Kamdesh.”

A pause. “Our CIA friends said they wanted to know if we saw anything unusual in that area.”

“Spooks, don’t you just love ‘em. I’ve uploaded the recording, what comes next? We can loiter in the area if you wish.”

“Nah, no need. Stay on mission, but if anything comes up, and they want you to take a second look, I’ll call you.”

“Copy that, AWACS base. Hawk Two, out.”

The base communications officer attached the file to a secure email. He sent the email to the Kabul Chief of Station. Then he sat back and forgot about it. He had better things to do than concern himself with spook games. Like the date he’d fixed up for that evening. A date he had every intention of making last until breakfast.
